Fri. Oct. 21, 7-9 pm. FAIR Adoption Discussion and Support Group, San Francisco.
Last month the group decided to discuss the intersection of race and adoption, starting with the October meeting. The discussion is open to parents in all kinds of adoptive families. Race and racism affect everyone, not just people of color. How do we raise nonracist kids in a racist society? How does race and racism affect the adoption community? If we are white parents of children of color, how can we help our kids develop a positive racial identity?
We would especially appreciate the participation of adoptive parents of color who are willing to share some of their experiences growing up and their strategies for teaching kids to handle racism in all its forms, both overt taunts and subtle slights.
We'll be talking about our family's experiences and reflecting on Cheri Register's new book, BEYOND GOOD INTENTIONS, particularly the sections on racism.
